Award-winning speakers, sought-after performers and cutting-edge comedians filled Hay-on-Wye from May 21st- May 31st for HowTheLightGetsIn2015– the Institute of Art and Idea’s annual philosophy and music festival. This year’s theme was Fantasy and Reality, with over 200 debates and talks which interrogated our understanding of reality and uncovered the fantasies that shape our world.

Debates questioned the possibility for certainty in a postmodern world, with highlights including politicians Diane Abbott and Natalie Bennett going up against psychiatrist Mark Salter and author of Pharmageddon David Healy to discuss the myths at the heart of the NHS; a search for the truth of black holes with Laura Mersini-Houghton; and Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman going head-to-head with free market politician Jamie Whyte to examine happiness and inequality.

If you couldn’t join us at the festival this year, it's not too late to get involved. HowTheLightGetsIn 2015 may be over, but all debates and talks from past festivals are available for free online, so you don't have to miss a thing. Continue the conversation and catch up on what you missed through our online channel, iai.tv.

New videos will be coming your way every fortnight, so you can learn about the relationship between atheism and advanced capitalism with Terry Eagleton, or about the possible alternatives to the Selfish Gene in Making Humans.
